India: CIL likely to float Tender for 5-7MnT of Imported Coal 

Coal India Limited (CIL) is stepping up on coal imports and likely to float tender for around 5-6 Million Tonnes (MnT) to supply power utilities as per quality mentioned in CIL's Fuel Supply Agreement (FSA).

To meet the demand-supply gap, CIL movement on coal imports, which is followed by discussions with end users and trading firms. However CIL is expecting to receive advance payments from power plants for imported coal and firm confirmation is still awaited from power plants.

According to officials, the final pre-bid meeting with government-owned trading firms like MMTC and State Trading Corporation (STC), through which imports shipments would be channelized, is scheduled later this week. On August 8, CIL had a Pre-Notice Inviting Tender meeting with power producing public sector power entities regarding supply of imported coal to power plants facing coal shortage.

For total capacity of power station around 60,000 Mega Watt, CIL has signed 140 FSA's and as per the last year Presidential directive to CIL for providing at least 80% fuel supply, CIL can supply only 65% coal from domestic production and so rest will be supplied with imported coal.

For FY 14 till July CIL has achieved 96.7% production target where target was 140.32MnT and produced 135.64MnT. Offtake target also achieved 97.8% where target was 156.86MnT and offtake was 153.47MnT for the same period.
