India: Chrome ore dispatches climb 18% m-o-m in Mar’22

Indian chrome ore dispatches climbed by 18% m-o-m in March 2022 on rising demand from the major ferro chrome smelters in line with increased prices of the latter in the month under review.

Dispatches from OMC increased by 31% m-o-m in March with a major volume supplied to Jindal Stainless followed by Visa Steel. Meanwhile, dispatches from Tata Steel inched up by 4% m-o-m with the major volume kept for captive consumption, while around 78,000 t was supplied to the conversion units and some other units.

Procurement trend

Jindal Stainless Steel (76,610 t) and Tata Steel (65,688 t) remained the two largest receivers of chrome ore in March.

Jindal Stainless Steel sourced the raw material from OMC and FACOR, while Tata Steel procured the entire volume from its captive mines. Meanwhile, IMFA procured 67% of the material from captive mines and the rest from OMC.
