India: CG based Sponge Manufacturers raise Iron Ore Purchase from NMDC in Jun’14

SteelMint Introduces Special Report on
Iron Ore Railway Movement”

Chhattisgarh (C.G.) based Sponge iron manufacturers have raised their purchases of Iron ore from NMDC by 35% in the month of June, 2014 owing to restricted supply from Odisha (after Supreme Court’s directive on 16th May 2014). Number of rakes loaded from NMDC to CG based sponge units in the month of June stood at 85 against 63 in May, 2014.

Sources close to this matter mentioned that buying interest from CG based manufacturers have increased as most of the merchant mines are closed in Odisha since May 17, 2014.

Chhattisgarh is one of the largest Sponge making state in the country with an installed capacity of about 9 MnT.

“It is tough to source Iron ore from Odisha, as most of the merchant miners are non- operational and the operational ones are overbooked. We either have to rely on Iron pellets or ore from NMDC. Net landed cost of CLO from NMDC’s Chhattisgarh mine will cost us around INR 8,800/MT, however from Odisha it will cost us INR 8,200-8,300/MT and Pellets will cost INR 8,900/MT,” said a Sponge iron manufacturer based in Raipur.

NMDC’s Iron ore production stood at about 7.5 MnT in Q1 FY15.
