India: BigMint’s ferrous scrap index remains stable d-o-d even as demand stays firm

  • Sponge iron prices increase by INR 100/t d-o-d
  • Semis, finished steel prices up INR 100-200/t today

BigMint’s domestic end-cutting scrap index, tracking the Mandi Gobindgarh market, remained unchanged d-o-d at INR 38,100/tonne (t) DAP on 23 March 2026. HMS and LMS prices rose INR 100-200/t, driven by the ongoing gas crisis and a minor regional scrap shortage. Moderate demand emerged for semi-finished and finished steel, while scrap demand stayed firm.

The imported scrap market remained weak, pressured by a stronger dollar and a depreciating rupee, which increased the landed cost for Indian buyers. Geopolitical tensions further added to uncertainty, acting as a key deterrent to aggressive import bookings. Meanwhile, imported scrap prices continued to rise, prompting mills to shift their focus toward domestic scrap procurement to manage costs and ensure supply stability.

Alternative raw material prices
