- Scrap arrivals adequate, but buyers also start booking imports
- Semis, finished steel prices increase by INR 100/t d-o-d
BigMint’s domestic end-cutting scrap index, tracking the Mandi Gobindgarh market, increased by INR 100/tonne (t) d-o-d to INR 42,500/t DAP on 1 Sept 2026.
The Mandi Gobindgarh market today witnessed moderate demand for scrap, while semi-finished and finished steel sentiment also remained subdued as many buyers kept purchases paused. At the same time, scrap supply into the cluster remained adequate, with decent scrap arrivals, while sponge iron inflows also remained healthy. Some steelmakers have slowly begun booking imported scrap in the $375-$378/t range as a cost hedge.
A mill owner informed BigMint, “Despite softer trading, market participants are hoping for a more positive price trend in coming days, driven by rising input costs (notably sponge iron and scrap) that are already feeding into routine steelmaking economics.”
