India’s total automobile production was recorded at 25.85 million units (MU) in calendar year 2022 (CY22), according to provisional data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) maintained by SteelMint. Production volume registered a 7.4% y-o-y growth compared to 24.06 MU in CY21.
Meanwhile, cumulative automobile sales rose by 12.2% y-o-y to 20.75 MU in CY22 compared to 18.49 MU in the previous year.
Category-wise production and sales
Passenger vehicles: Passenger vehicles production stood at 3.9 MU in CY22, an increase of 18.4 y-o-y compared to 3.29 MU recorded in CY21.
Sales of passenger vehicles rose by 23% y-o-y to 3.79 MU in CY22 against 3.08 MU seen in the previous year.
Commercial vehicles: Commercial vehicles production registered a 32% y-o-y growth to 1.01 MU in CY22 as against 0.77 MU a year-ago.
Sales of the same were recorded at 0.93 MU last year, a 38% increase y-o-y compared to 0.67 MU in CY21.
Three-wheelers: Production of three-wheeler vehicles surged 57% y-o-y to 0.62 MU in CY22 compared to 0.4 MU in CY21.
Three-wheelers sales also rose significantly by 59% y-o-y to 0.41 MU.
Two-wheelers: Two-wheelers production inched up by 3.5% y-o-y to 20.3 MU in CY22 over 19.6 MU a year ago.
Sales of two-wheeler vehicles grew 8% y-o-y to 15.6 MU last year compared to 14.46 MU in CY21.
