Steel major ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) recorded total iron ore and pellet sourcing at 14.53 million tonnes (mnt) in CY’21, an increase of 14% against 12.78 mnt seen in CY’20.
The company’s captive iron ore sourcing from Odisha was recorded at 4.67 mnt in CY’21 as against 1.14 mnt in CY’20, a significant rise of 310% y-o-y. Notably, AM/NS India commenced mining operations at Ghoraburhani-Sagasahi iron ore block in Odisha on 9 Sept’21. The mine has an EC limit of 7.16 mnt/year and 99.59 mn t of iron ore reserves spread over an area of 139.165 hectares in Sundergarh district. Apart from this, it also procured ore from its Thakurani mine that it won in auctions.
Iron ore procurement from NMDC Chhattisgarh up in CY’21: The steelmaker procured 8.52 mnt of iron ore in CY’21 from NMDC’s Bailadila mines in Chhattisgarh via slurry pipeline, against 6.97 mnt sourced in CY’20.
Sourcing from Odisha merchant mines down in CY’21: The company sourced 1.3 mnt of iron ore from Odisha’s merchant mines in CY’21 as against 4.17 mn t in the previous year.
Out of the total iron ore sourced from Odisha’s merchant mines, the largest share was contributed by Rungta mines at 0.48 mn t followed by Indrani Patnaik at 0.35 mn t in CY’21. Along with this, the company recorded imports at 88,000 tonnes (t) for the year as against 4,98,180 t in CY’20.
