India: AM/NS iron ore sourcing up 14% m-o-m in Nov’21*

Steel major Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) recorded total iron ore and pellet sourcing at 1.22* million tonnes (mn t) in Nov’21, witnessing an increase of 14%, m-o-m, as against 1.07 mn t in Oct’21.

The company’s captive iron ore sourcing from Odisha was recorded at 364,939 tonnes (t) in Nov’21 as against 371,850 t in Oct’21, marginally down 2% m-o-m.

Iron ore procurement from NMDC (Chhattisgarh) rises in Nov’21: The steelmaker procured 807,000 t of iron ore in Nov’21 from NMDC’s Bailadila mines (Chhattisgarh) via slurry pipeline, against 697,000 t in Oct’21, a significant rise of 16% m-o-m.

Sourcing from Odisha merchant mines up in Nov’21: The company sourced 52,193 t of iron ore from Odisha’s merchant mines in Nov’21 as against only 3,042 t in the previous month.

Out of the total iron ore sourced from Odisha’s merchant mines in Nov’21, the maximum quantity was contributed by Rungta Mines at 30,036 t followed by MGM Minerals and MG Mohanty at 20,157 t and 2,000 t, respectively.

Along with this, the company recorded nil imports for the month, according to customs data maintained with SteelMint.

Outlook

The miner’s iron ore sourcing is likely to remain supported as it had announced the commissioning of its second pellet plant with a capacity of 6 million tonnes per annum (mntpa) at Paradip, Odisha. The plant doubled production capacity to 12 mn t, making it the largest single-location pelletisation complex in the country. With this, AM/NS India’s national pelletisation capacity rose to 20 mntpa. Also, the company has concluded a couple of pellet export shipments in the past couple of weeks which may keep iron ore requirement supported.
