India: Alang – World’s Largest Ship Breaking Yard to Resume Operations

Alang – one of the largest shipbreaking yard in the world located in Gujarat, western India, is likely to resume operations from tomorrow (21 Apr’20) which were suspended due to COVID-19 pandemic.

It was learnt from SteelMint sources that there are certain norms issued by administration which need to be fulfilled through industrialists or trade participants where particular things need to be assured with complete safety to prevent spread of COVID 19. This includes maintaining adequate distance with a limited number of workers, basic necessities, etc.

Few of the yards along with rolling mills and IF based in Bhavnagar had requested the same to the administrator and received permission to resume operations from 21 Apr’20. Production levels are likely to be maintained as per demand scenario.

Alang is known for providing basic raw material (melting scrap) to Bhavnagar based rolling mills as well as Induction Furnace (IF) owners.

Further, few of the rolling mills got some initial orders for supply of finished steel from specific projects following announcement of resumption of construction work to provide job opportunities to daily wage workers.

It’s being assessed that production utilisation might remain slow initially due to uncertain market conditions and capacity utilization may pick up gradually.

Recently, a couple of steel plants based in Gandhidham offered billet at INR 29,500-30,000/MT FoR, however inquiries remained limited.
