India: 0.23 mnt coal sold in SECL auction

  • G6 dominates allocation with 62% share
  • Agarwal Coal, UltraTech top buyers

South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) conducted a spot e-auction on 10 April 2025, allocating 232,600 tonnes (0.23 mnt) of non-coking coal across six grades. G6 emerged as the most allocated grade, forming 62% of the total volume, with strong buyer interest pushing bid premiums up to 44% above the notified prices.

Auction highlights

G6 accounted for 145,000 t across two size variants – (-)250 mm and (-)100 mm – with average winning prices at INR 3,962/t and INR 3,857/t, respectively. The (-)250 mm from Rampur Batura saw the highest allocation at 110,000 t. G15 followed with 44,600 t booked at INR 882/t, a modest 20% rise over the floor.

Other grades included G8 (25,000 t at INR 3,515/t), G7 (15,000 t at INR 4,141/t – highest price across all grades), and G10 (3,000 t at INR 2,198/t). G7’s allocation came from Haldibari UG, indicating rising niche demand for higher-GCV coal from underground mines.

High allocations from Rampur Batura, Bijari

Rampur Batura OC dominated in volume, offering the entire G6 (-)250 mm stock. Bijari OC contributed the full G15 allocation. Other mines like Sharda OC and Kanchan OC also saw complete offtake, reinforcing continued regional competition for mid-GCV coal.

Buyer participation: UltraTech, Agarwal Coal lead

Agarwal Coal Corporation booked the largest volume at 26,000 t, followed by Agarwal Fuel Corporation with 20,000 t. UltraTech Cement secured 13,650 t of high-GCV grades, bidding aggressively at INR 4,025/t. Other notable buyers included Dharma Enterprises and Shri Shyam Minerals.

Market insight

Domestic coal prices have remained largely range-bound in central India against the last auction conducted.
