Imported South African Lump Prices Move Up Amid Hike in Global Prices

According to market sources report to SteelMint, assessment for South African lump to India is heard to be increased to around USD 96-97/MT, CNF Kandla. The lump assessment have witnessed a rise as against last assessment of around USD 85/MT, CFR Kandla towards the beginning of the month.

The increase is attributed to rise in iron ore index prices. The iron ore prices today (20th Dec) is assessed at USD 72.15/MT, CFR China, up by USD 5/MT as against USD 67.15/MT, CFR China, last week.

A west India based supplier shared- “No bookings made by west Indias mills due to sufficient cargo availability with them. Also finish steel demand has come down in past few weeks, so mills may take some time to book fresh cargoes”.

Towards the beginning of month, South African miner Kumba and Assmang had declared force majeure to some of its buyers due to Transnet (Transport Company) closing the iron ore export channel railway as a result of structural damage to railway line owing to truck collision. However, the railway line has been repaired and the exports have resumed from 10th Dec.

Lump Premium increased on high Chinese demand

Lump premium have picked up this week to 0.3721/DMTU as against USD 0.3200/DMTU last week amidst increased demand by Northern China amidst high sintering cuts.

South Africa iron ore export shipments increased in Nov’18

South African lumps export shipments to India witnessed sharp rise for the month of Nov’18 at 0.4 MnT, up around four folds as against being 0.11 MnT in Oct’18. Post resumption at Saldanha port in Oct’18, the port depicted sharp rise in Nov’18 exports for the month at 4.9 MnT, up 43% as against being 3.4 MnT in Oct’18.
