HBIS Group and Tenova Group to Build a Hydrogen Metallurgy Plant

China’s HBIS Group and Italy’s Tenova Group on 22 Nov’19 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreeing to the in-depth cooperation of both the parties in hydrogen metallurgy technology, and collaborating with Capital Engineering & Research Incorporation Limited (CERI) to set up world’s first hydrogen metallurgy demonstration project of 1.2 MnT capacity.

The project will carry out innovative R&D covering distributed green energy, low-cost hydrogen production, coke oven gas purification, gas self-reforming, hydrogen metallurgy, finished product hot delivery, carbon dioxide removal, etc., to explore a route of low carbon even zero carbon economy for world steel industry, and lead the transformation of traditional steel metallurgy process by changing the energy consumption structure and completely solving the environmental pollution and carbon emission problems caused by steel metallurgy process.

At present, under the background of the global “decarbonization” tide, the technological reform of traditional steel metallurgical process centering on reducing carbon footprint and emissions has become a new trend in the green development of the steel industry.

Replacing coal with hydrogen, changing the energy consumption structure, and realizing the industrialization of “low carbon” and even “zero carbon” processes are the technical directions to completely solve the problems of environmental pollution and carbon emissions in the production process.

The project will start with a change in energy consumption structure to completely solve the environmental pollution and carbon emissions caused by the steel metallurgy process, HBIS said.
