India: Alang’s ship-breaking scrap prices remain firm d-o-d on tight supply

  • Logistics constraints keep scrap prices supported
  • Higher steel prices in Gujarat contribute to d-o-d stability

Ship-breaking melting scrap prices in Alang, Gujarat, remained unchanged d-o-d on 29 July 2026, with HMS (80:20) assessed at INR 33,800/t ex-yard. The market continued to find support from constrained scrap availability and logistics constraints, even as downstream steel demand remained subdued and procurement stayed largely requirement-based.

Gujarat market update

Sentiment in Gujarat improved marginally as finished steel prices strengthened. Bhavnagar billet prices increased by INR 100/t d-o-d to INR 41,700/t DAP, while Ahmedabad rebar prices rose by INR 200/t to INR 46,200/t ex-works. The gains reflected steady buying from local consumers and provided some support to ship-breaking scrap values. However, market participants remained cautious, with purchases limited to immediate requirements rather than aggressive restocking.

Mandi market update

In north India, the Mandi Gobindgarh market presented a mixed trend. Billet prices remained stable at INR 42,450/t, while rebar prices declined by INR 200/t to INR 47,100/t. HMS (80:20) prices were unchanged at INR 35,100/t.

The stability in scrap prices was supported by mild supply tightness and routine procurement by secondary steelmakers. At the same time, weaker demand for semi-finished and finished steel compared with the previous trading session continued to limit upward price momentum.

Outlook

The Alang ship-breaking scrap market is expected to remain largely stable in the near term. While subdued downstream steel demand may limit any significant upside, constrained scrap availability and slower inflows into key consuming markets are likely to prevent a sharp decline. Unless finished steel demand improves materially or scrap supply increases, prices are expected to trade within a narrow range with only minor day-to-day fluctuations.
