Bhubaneswar: A senior mines ministry official of the central government has made it clear that there is no plan to change the existing export duty structure of high grade iron ore.
The government of India in the general budget has abolished export duty on low grade iron ore (below Fe 58%) while keeping the export duty on high grade iron ore unchanged at 30%.
“So far the existing export duty on high grade iron ore is 30%. But, earlier we intended to review it. But there has been a strong protest by the domestic steel, sponge iron and pellet industry. So keeping this in view, now we do not want to make any change in the existing duty structure of iron ore” said union Secretary of mines Mr. Balwinder Kumar in the sidelines of a event here on Wednesday (11 May’16).
On the issue of reviewing export duty on chrome ore he said that the government is examining the proposals.
“Different stakeholders have made different representations on the issue. While the user industry wants roll back of the duty structure, miners are in favor of the current duty structure. So the government is examining these demands” he said.
