Government Plans Curbing Coal Blocks from Tilaiya UMPP

After Sasan UMPP, centre may take away coal blocks from another UMPP of Reliance Power. Central Mine Plan and Design Institute (CMPDI) has been directed to review the allocation of coal blocks to Tilaiya Ultra Mega Power Project of Reliance Power.

Government on Thursday indicated that it may take back two coal blocks namely Kerandari B and C attached to Tilaiya UMPP of Reliance Power. This move of centre is in view of SC’s order in Aug’14 to restrict the diversion of the coal blocks allotted to UMPPS for any commercial purpose.

According to centre, the coal obtained from these coal block can be utlized to fuel other UMPP. The mentioned two blocks have a reserve of about 1,200 MnT. Government by this step can check the extraction of extra coal than requirement.

The Tilaiya UMPP is 4,000-megawatt (MW)  Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP). It is one among the soon to be established projects of Reliance Power.

It should be noted that, ministry in May’15 had canceled Chhatrasal coal block allotted to 4,000 MW Sasan Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) of Reliance Power. Against this, Reliance Power had filed a petition in Delhi high court last month, on the grounds that the coal obtained from Chhatrasal and other two coal blocks was the main reason for its bidding for power plants. It also mentioned that because of these three blocks allocated to Sasan (UMPP), the company had agreed to offer power supply from the power project at competitive tariff of INR 1.19 per unit.
