Ministry of Steel has extended the time period for stainless steel makers and dealers to get registered with BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) by three months.
This decision came after the several industry bodies such as PPMAI (Process Plant & Machinery Association of India), Metal & Stainless Steel Merchant Association (MSSMA) and AISSIA (All India Stainless Steel Industries Association) have approached the Steel Ministry on the matter.
Three months back the government has issued a Stainless Steel QC order making it mandatory to register with BIS and prohibited the manufacture, import, storage, sale and distribution of stainless steel products by trade and industry without such registration.
The time period given for the same was three months which was due for expiry on 9 Sep’16. However, the industry bodies alleged that QC has been implemented without discussion with end users. Thus, amid the clash of industry bodies, Union Minister of Steel even formed a committee to resolve the issue.
ISSDA (Indian Stainless Steel Development Association) was against the government’s decision to extend the QC control order citing that draft of Stainless Steel Quality Control Order was in public domain since June 2015 and the relevant processes for obtaining BIS certification should have been initiated long ago. And that the final order was notified on 10 Jun’16 with an additional period of 3 months till Sep’16.
However, in the war of words between ISSDA and other industry bodies such as PPMAI, AISSIA, and MSSMA final decision went in the favor of those who wanted an extension to obtain BIS certification.
