On 28 Jul’16, Directorate of Mines & Geology (govt. of Goa) has issued a permit cancellation order to Vedanta amid violations in carrying 12,000 MT iron ore lump it procured from Karnataka e-actions.
Goa DMG has stopped iron ore transportation through roads over onset of monsoon via notification dated 27 Jun’16. However transportation of ore is allowed during monsoons for domestic consumption.
Upon applications of Vedanta dated 16 Jul’16, import and transit permits were issued by this office upon the specific condition that entry tickets for the trucks shall be issued at the check post at Mollem from where vehicle movement in Goa shall be monitored by DMG staff. And after weighment at their plant the iron ore could be stacked in the stockyard and could be utilized for domestic consumption so as to ensure it is used only for domestic purpose and not misused.
Vedanta’s iron ore purchases from Karnataka e-auctions
Vedanta has been seen procuring iron ore from Karnataka e-auctions. In the month of Jun’16 it sourced two lots of 12,000 MT lump (Fe 64%) from P. Balasubba Setty & sons mines’. And in the month of Jul’16 (till e-auctions conducted on 23 Jul’16) Vedanta sourced two lots of 4,000 MT lump (Fe 64% & 63%) from private miners.
Goa DMG cancels import & transit permit of Vedanta for 12,000 MT lump
On 26 Jul’16, DMG staff was deputed at Mollem check post and could not find Vedanta’s ore laden trucks following which import and transit permits issued to Vedanta by Goa DMG were suspended till further orders. Later inspecting team discovered that all iron ore laden trucks were already unloaded at plant sites without waiting for DMG officials after which import and transit permit issued to Vedanta in respect of 12,000 MT lump procured from Karnataka e-auctions were cancelled.
No fresh import permit shall be issued in respect of the above mentioned quantity till DMG does detail inventory of the ore unloaded by measuring the same on weighbridge, securing a distinct stack/stacks for such imported quantity having satisfactory mechanism in place for removal of material for daily consumption from storage stacks and storing the same in distinct stacks apart from the storage stacks so that proper accounting of ore takes place.
