Global coal-fired electricity generation is expected to rise by nearly 5% y-o-y in 2021, which happens to be exceeding the pre-pandemic levels this year, as per the Paris-based International Energy Agency (IEA). This could be attributed to burgeoning energy demand amid buoyant economic activity. The agency expects Asian coal demand to expand in the coming years, while China’s coal capacity is expected to grow until 2025, and then move along a plateau before it starts falling eventually. Coal demand from North America and Europe is expected to shrink by 2024.
