Germany: Coal reliance increases due to high gas prices

Germany’s reliance on coal increased amid high gas prices and rising power demand from France. The country generates more than a third of its electricity from coal-fired power plants. It seems difficult for the country to phase out from coal use by 2038. Germany’s coal imports rose by 13% y-o-y to 37.21 mnt in Jan-Oct’22 as compared to 32.81 mnt in Jan-Oct’21.
