Germany: Aluminium imports,exports drop up to 6% m-o-m in Oct’22

Germany, a major consumer of aluminium in the European region, has released its imports and exports data for October 2022.

Imports scenario

Imports of aluminium were recorded at 730,217 tonnes (t) in October against 755,479 t in September, down 3% m-o-m. Of total imports, ore/concentrates decreased by 7% to 269,955 t, semi-finished products by 6% to 217,575 t, while finished product imports were stable recording a marginal rise of 1% to 155,065 t. Scrap imports went up by 9% to 87,622 t.

The country’s aluminium imports moved down by 3% y-o-y compared from 760,000 t in October 2021. A total of 7.66 mnt was imported by the country in January-November 2022.

Country-wise imports

• Exports from Guinea down m-o-m: Export volumes stood at 182,757 t in October, a fall of 25% m-o-m as against 243,175 t in September. Similarly, on a y-o-y basis, export volumes decreased by 25% from 244,346 t in October 2021.
• Exports from Netherlands increase m-o-m: The Netherlands, a major exporter to Germany, saw export volumes rising to October at 134,004 t as against 81,227 t in the previous month, up 65% m-o-m. Shipments also increased by 65% from 80,990 t in the same period last year.

Exports

Germany’s exports stood at 315,242 t in October, a m-o-m decline of 6% compared with September shipments which were around 336,953 t. Of total exports, ore/concentrates decreased by 22% to 28,032 t, finished products exports fell by 14% to 149,952 t, semi-finished exports were up 6% to 45,208 t, while scrap shipments rose by 9% to 92,051 t.

On y-o-y basis, exports fell by 16% to 315,242 t in October compared to the same period last year. A total of 3.52 mnt was exported by the country in January-November this year.

Country-wise exports

• Exports to Austria increase: Exports from Germany stood at 39,746 t in October, an increase of 30% m-o-m as against 30,614 t in September. On y-o-y basis, export volumes decreased by 4% from 41,290 t in October 2021.
• Exports to Italy edge up: Germany’s exports to Italy were at 29,819 t in October, up 4% from 28,662 t in September. However, on y-o-y basis volumes decreased by 27% in October compared with 40,636 t in the same period last year.
