Though
the Indian furnaces are dominated by sponge iron, scrap is likely to be a
significant material for future steel making in Indian furnaces, according the
All India Induction Furnace Association (AIIFA).
In
the annual general meeting of AIIFA held on 20th-21st, members
have shown a positive attitude towards the significance of ferrous scrap in
Indian steel making, especially in the mini steel plants installed in India.
“We
feel that it is hard to run our mini steel plants without scrap in the coming years
owing to the shortage of raw material, high electricity tariffs and heavy duty
structures. Using scrap for steel making will be oxygen to keep our industry
alive”, said Mr. Ashok Surana, Vice President, All India Induction Furnace
Association in the meeting.
“Still
we have a lot of challenges against the smooth operation of the industry with the
use of scrap. Weak Rupee, import charges and ICD clearance issues are the main
factors which restrict us to make it feasible using scrap. But we see scrap as
our next hope for the survival if Govt intervenes”, he added
