SECL has proposed to expand Kasmunda coal mine ten times its present capacity. The proposal was rejected by panel from Environment Ministry on grounds of trespass of environmental laws.
Expert committee, constituted by Environment Ministry to check pros and cons has clearly rejected SECL’s proposal to for expansion of Kasmunda coal mine in Chhattisgarh. The committee recommended that the mine is violating environmental enjoins as per norms of ministry. Further the team cited that the mine has failed to sustain air and water quality in area of its operation .
The above expansion, if allowed, would have increased its mining capacity by ten times. Presently, the mining capacity of Kasmunda mine is assessed at 6 MnT annually.
The committee strongly recommended that SECL will not be permitted to expand its Kasmunda coal mine beyond earlier sanctioned capacity.
