The first phase of the expanded capacity of Essar Steel Ltd’s plant at Hazira in Surat district of Gujarat will be commissioned this month.

The existing plant has a capacity of 4.6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). Essar Steel is setting up additional capacity of 5 MTPA through a new facility next to the existing one.

The total capacity of Essar Steel will now be increased to 9.6 MTPA, said a company official. Essar Steel has, over the last two decades, invested nearly Rs. 16,000 crore in the Hazira facility.

This involved setting up of a sponge iron plant, followed by a steel plant and downstream facilities. The expanded capacity also includes a pipe mill of 0.6 MTPA, extra-wide plate mill of 1.5 MTPA, which have already been commissioned, and an Iron and steel-making facility of 5 MTPA, to be commissioned in September.

It will adopt a mix of three technologies of Iron-making in the expanded capacity.

Recently, the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests had given environmental clearance to the installation of coke oven (1.2 MTPA, recovery type) as part of the proposed expansion of Essar Steel at Hazira.

The upcoming 12 MTPA Iron ore pelletisation complex at Paradeep, Orissa, is scheduled to start by October 2012.
