- Atlantic iron ore routes outperform as Pacific gains remain measured
- Long-haul Capesize routes lead gains; Supramax firms on improved regional activity
Dry bulk iron ore freight markets presented a mixed picture in the week ended 28 July 2026. Atlantic Capesize routes extended gains on the back of robust exports and tightening vessel availability, while the Pacific market edged higher on steady Australian iron ore shipments.
Improved fixture activity across key long-haul routes underpinned sentiment during the week. However, weaker freight forward agreement (FFA) values and elevated bunker prices kept overall market confidence in check.
The Atlantic basin remained the stronger performer, driven by healthy iron ore loadings from Brazil and South Africa, alongside firmer owner sentiment. Even so, chartering activity progressed at a measured pace as market participants remained cautious despite ample cargo availability.
Among the major routes, Tubarao-Qingdao and Saldanha Bay-Qingdao posted the sharpest increases, reflecting strong export volumes, a tighter Atlantic tonnage list, and active fixture negotiations. In the Pacific, Hedland-Qingdao freight firmed on sustained Australian shipments, consistent miner enquiries, and limited prompt vessel supply. Meanwhile, the Paradip-Qingdao Supramax route also recorded modest gains, supported by improving cargo enquiries from India’s east coast, firmer regional fixing activity, and reduced prompt tonnage.

Outlook
Dry bulk iron ore freight is expected to remain firm in the near term, supported by healthy cargo enquiries from the east coast, steady Australian and Brazilian exports and relatively tight prompt vessel availability. Seasonal restocking and sustained export activity across key origins are likely to keep freight rates supported.
However, upside potential may remain limited by cautious chartering activity, softer FFAs, and elevated bunker prices, which continue to weigh on market confidence. Any significant shift in Chinese iron ore demand or vessel availability across the Atlantic and Pacific basins will be closely monitored for further directional cues.
