Rakes supplied by Indian railways for domestic coal movement have extended the fall on absolute terms M-o-M, but had exhibited a noticeable rise in daily average loading to the various end-users in Feb’20.
Data compiled by CoalMint research shows that coal rakes delivered in Feb’20 were marked 3% lower on the month at 11,659 compared with 12,048 noted in Jan’20. However, average loading on daily basis had crossed 400 mark for the first time since May’19, as it grew 3% M-o-M to 402.03 rakes/day in Feb’20 compared with 388.65 rakes/day in Jan’20.
Higher rake dispatch on the month was supported by the hike in coal-fired power generation on account of early onset of summer, but the rate was down 5% Y-o-Y from 421.61 rakes/day noted in Feb’19.
Rakes Supplied to Power Sector:
A comparatively better coal stock at thermal power plants than previous year eased requirement for prompt rake loading in the period.
Incidentally, the power stations were reported to have a closing stock of 20.208 MnT at the end of Jan’19 which was steadily raised to 25.83 MnT towards the end of Feb’19, thus depicting an increase of 28% M-o-M. However, closing stocking in Feb’20 was already seen at a superior level of 37.251 MnT, which had increased 7% on the month.
Coal delivered to the power sector totaled 8,631 at an average of 297.62 rakes/day in Feb’20. Loading through railways fell 6% on the year from 318.25 rakes/day noted in Feb’19, although the volume increased 3% on the month from 297.62 rakes/day in Jan’20.
Rakes Supplied to Non-Power Sector:
Comfortable stock position at the power stations provided a window to augment coal volumes to the non-power sector, relying on indigenous fuel supply.
During the month of Feb’20, rakes delivered to non-power sector were registered at 3,028 as against 3,126 in Jan’20.
Average loading envisaged for non-power sector stood 104.41 rakes/day in Feb’20, rising 4% M-o-M from 100.84 rakes/day in Jan’20, which had also noted modest increase Y-o-Y from 103.36 rakes/day in Feb’19.
