Coking Coal imports in India during Apr’17 had fallen 0.5% against that in Mar’17, according to an analysis by CoalMint Research.
On a year-on-year comparison, the imports in the first month of the current fiscal also had declined by around 4% over the corresponding month of the last fiscal.
During Apr’17, 3.82 MT of Coking Coal was imported into India. In Mar’17, the imports were slightly higher at 3.84 MnT.

The decline in the imports during the month could be attributed to the supply disruption that ensued aftermath of the occurrence of the Debbie cyclone, hitting the Queensland region of Australia.
In Apr’16, the imports were marginally higher at 3.99 MnT.
Notably, imports from Australia during Apr’17 were lower by 572 MT than that in Mar’17; while, imports from all other countries were higher during the month as compared to the imports in the previous month. The shortfall in imports from Australia arose due to the supply disruption caused by the cyclone.

Amongst the various ports in India, the Mormugao port had handled the highest volume of import traffic during the month, followed by the Paradip ad Vizag ports.
