Coal Supply to Indian Power Sector Rises by 6% in FY16

Coal supply to power sector rose in India by 6% to 408 MnT in last fiscal. CIL’s yearly production also grew by 8.5% in FY16.

Coal India, a state run largest coal producer, supplied about 408 MnT of coal to power utilities in FY16 with a considerable rise of 6% during the period. The dispatch figure for March was marginally lower by 1.8% to 36.1 MnT compared with 36.8 MnT in last year.

However, supply of coal by CIL to power utilities has been escalated since FY13. Whilst, supply grew from 353.83 MnT in FY14 to 385.40 MnT in FY15 and further to 408 MnT in FY16.

During FY16, coal dispatches rose sharply on the grounds of increase in CIL output and improvement in evacuation of the dry fuel, according to industry analysts.

Coal supply of SCCL (Singareni Collieries Company Limited), a jointly owned by the central and Telangana government, rose by 20.7% to 47.3 MnT in FY16, which was 39.2 MnT in FY15.

The government is targeting coal production of 1.5 BnT by 2020, of which Coal India is looking at 1 BnT.

CIL’s & SCCL’s coal production in FY16

CIL: Coal India, the world’s biggest coal producer, registered a total coal production of 536 MnT, out of targeted 550 MnT in FY16. With the conclusion of financial year, production figure is out, depicting that the giant registered a growth of 8.5% in FY16. CIL had produced 494 MnT of coal in FY15, which grew by 42 MnT in the last fiscal.

SCCL: State-owned Singareni Collieries Company’s coal output increased by 15% to 60.38 MnT in FY16. Production stood at 52.54 MnT in the year-ago. Company’s coal dispatch during Apr’15-Mar’16 increased by 11.43% to 58.67 MnT as against 52.65 MnT in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.
