>> Towards the terminal days of Apr’18, there are chances of seeing some revision to the biggest target in the history of coal mining in India—the milestone of producing 1 BnT of coal by FY20. The latest developments in the Coal Ministry indicate that the coal production target might be reworked as the coal consumption trend does not warrant that massive volume of coal production in the country.
The Ministry has hired the global consulting firm—KPMG—for conducting a fresh study pertaining to the revision of the target.
>>Whenever new practices are inducted, those are bound to encounter resistance. The Indian National Mine Workers Federation (INMWF) has announced that a day-long strike will be observed on 16 Apr’18 to protest against the impending actuation of commercial coal mining in India. According to the body, entry of private players into the coal mining space will hamper the existing state-run Coal India Limited apart from eroding jobs.
>>State-run power producer—NTPC, also the largest coal-based power generator in India, has commissioned the first unit of (2×660) MW Meja Thermal Power Project at Allahabad.
