PUBLIC HEARING NO LONGER NECESSARY FOR COAL EXPANSION PROJECTS
In a major relief to the coal industry, the Ministry of Environmental Clearance & CC has scrapped the public hearing requirement in obtaining forest clearances for coal expansion projects. Accordingly, coal mine expansion projects, involving capacity increment upto 40%, will no longer require public hearing in the implied context. This could be regarded as a measure for speeding up the environmental clearance projects.
CIL TO SHUT-DOWN 100 UNPROFITABLE MINES
The state-run miner—Coal India Limited (CIL)—will shut-down 100 unprofitable mines, according to a latest decision. Mines which produce low grade coal, with the production of less than 1 MnT, are considered as unprofitable mines.
