Coal Market Snapshots

>> The Maharashtra State Power Generation Company is facing severe coal shortage, which might disrupt power generation in the coming days. According to the information received, the power company is facing 43.53% coal shortage. It has received 95,773 MT of coal against the allocation of 119,000 MT.

>>Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, has received environmental clearance for expansion of the second phase of its Lakhanpur opencast coal mine located in the Jharsuguda district of Odisha.

Subsequent to the capacity expansion, the production capacity of the mine will go up to 21 MnTPA from the existing level of 18.75 MnTPA.

>>Indonesian coal benchmark price for Mar’18 was set at USD 101.86/MT, a rise of USD 1.17/MT over the benchmark price of USD 100.69/MT in Feb’18. Strong demand and limited supply due to bad weather were the factors behind the upward drift. The price is expected to undergo further upward traversals due to stronger Chinese demand.
