Coal Market Snapshots

>> Frequent strikes at the Kaniha and Talcher coalmines have impacted coal supplies to the 1,200 MW thermal power plant of Jindal India Thermal Power Limited, located near the Talcher coalfield in Odisha. The plant gets about 7,000 to 8,000 MT of coal every day against the actual requirement of 20,000 MT to run the plant at full capacity. Due to the acute coal shortage, the company was forced to stop one of the two 600 MW units.

>>Vietnam exported around 1.4 MnT of coal during the Jan-Aug’17 period, up by 142.1% against that in the same period of the previous year. The country is expected to produce 86.4 MnT of coal by 2020.

Vietnam National Coal Mineral Industries Holding Corporation, the largest coal producer in the country, produced around 24.6 MnT of coal during the eight month period. The company exported 8.6 MnT of the produce.

>>Coal production in Ukraine declined 9.4% to 23.59 MnT in Jan-Aug’17, down from 26.05 MnT in the same period of the previous year. During the period, Thermal coal production fell 5% to 19.09 MnT from 20.09 MnT, while, Coking Coal output declined by 24.5% to 4.5 MnT from 5.96 MnT.
