Coal India to increase its purchase target for December to March

Having missed its supply targets by almost 6 million tons
during April-November, Coal India Ltd (CIL) has now increased monthly
off-take targets for its subsidiaries for the remaining period by the same
amount so that monopoly can meet its annual target of 470 million tons.

On the other hand, CIL officials feel the monopoly may miss its annual supply
target marginally due to increased number of railway rakes which may not be
available during the period to make up the dip in supply. Drop in supply is due
to heavy rainfall and a number of holidays that occurred during November.

While target off-take for the April-November was pegged at 298.96 million tons, the company managed to supply 292.62 million tons – a shortfall of 6.34 million
tons during the period. During the corresponding period last year the company
managed to supply 270.55 million tons. “We have asked the subsidiaries to
increase the supply, more than the original targets for each of the remaining
months so that the annual supply target could be met,” a senior official
from CIL said.

Historically, production during rainy seasons fall and picks up during winter,
so does supply. However, cyclone Neelam had a negative effect of production
during the first ten days of November when production at almost
all mines dwindled. In fact, during November, production dipped about
2% against the previous corresponding period.

On the other hand, during April-November 2012, the company managed a 6.8% growth in production and an 8.2% rise in off take. CIL produced 265 million tons
during this period against 248 million tons in the previous corresponding
period.

However, the company has achieved about 63% of its production targets in the
first eight months of the year. On the off-take front, it has achieved 56% of
the target during the same period. In order to achieve its target the company
now has to achieve 37% of the production in the next four month while it has to
manage 44% of the target for off-take.
