Coal India halts plan to acquire coalmines abroad

Saturday, July 02,

The world’s largest coal producer Coal India Ltd. has halted its plan to acquire coalmines from abroad because of the delay in getting approval from the government. And due to the delay Coal India is not able to meet the rising domestic demand for coal especially from the fast growing power sector.

Coal India is liable to supply 80% of coal in India but now it is struggling to raise its coal production because of inadequate infrastructure and difficulties in getting environmental clearance. If coal India would not be able to meet the demand, then 142 million metric ton of demand-supply gap is estimated in the current fiscal year.
