“Coal production in
India is at a drop-off position on account of slow environment clearace, land acquisition and inadequate transport
facilities,” said Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal in New Delhi.
“Both public and
private companies have been suffering due to delays in obtaining environmental
and forestry clearances alongwith land acquisition problems,” the Minister told
at the 3rd Annual International Summit Coal Asia 2012.
“The demand and
domestic supply gap of coal has increased from about 50 million tonne (mt) in
2007-08 to 83 mt in 2010-11. The current years gap is expected to be 142 mt.
CIL's production growth and consumer satisfaction as per expected demand is hampered
due to its own regulations. The captive mining policy also failed to help the
sector grow,” he stated.
“Out of 195 blocks
allotted to various public and private companies only 29 blocks have entered
into coal production. The production capacity of 126 blocks with approved
mining plans earlier was above 400 mt with only 8% being the actual
contribution,” Jaiswal added.
