CIL’s Coal Dispatch to Steel Sector Fall 15% Y-o-Y in Apr’17-Dec’17

According to the data provided by Coal Ministry, Coal India Ltd (CIL) had recorded a decline of 15% in total coal dispatch to the Steel Sector during Apr’17-Dec’17.

CIL had dispatched 4.11 MnT coal to the steel sector during Apr’17-Dec’17 against the targeted value of 5.96 MnT, which was 15% lower on the year compared with the dispatch of 4.84 MnT coal recorded in the corresponding period of 2016.

Amid the domestic coal crunch that had hit the country in Aug’17, CIL had raised the coal supply to the power sector in order to revive the declining coal stock at the thermal power plants. The coal company had regulated the coal supply of Non-power sector, to augment coal supplies to the power plants.

Consequently, CIL’s coal dispatch to the Power Plants (Utilities) was recorded 8% higher on the year at 331.44 MnT during Apr’17-Dec’17, compared with 308.24 MnT in Apr’16-Dec’16. Also, the company had dispatched more coal than the targeted value of 325.35 MnT set during the period, for the Power Plants (Utilities).

Coal Dispatch to the Captive power sector (including fertilizer sector) had increased 29% Y-o-Y to 29.02 MnT during Apr’17-Dec’17, against the set target of 36.32 MnT for the period.

CIL’s coal dispatch to Cement and Sponge Iron sector was recorded at 2.95 MnT and 5.52 MnT respectively, against the target of 5.11 MnT and 7.12 MnT set for Apr’17-Dec’17 period.

Indian Coal Production in Apr’17-Dec’17:
Indian coal production totaled 461.42 MnT during Apr’17-Dec’17 period. CIL had a share of 83% in the total coal production, whose output had increased 1.6% Y-o-Y compared with the corresponding total of 2016.

SCCL’s coal production recorded slight fall of 1% during Apr’17-Dec’17, while coal production from the Captive sources had increased 11.09% Y-o-Y to 27.34 MnT during Apr’17-Dec’17.

As per the Coal Ministry Report, India has set a coal production target of 730.10 MnT for FY18 (Apr’17-Mar’18).
