CIL-SCCL Coal Dispatch

CIL’s Coal Dispatch to Power Sector Up 9% M-o-M in Dec’19

Coal supplied by CIL to the power sector has continued the growth on the monthly basis, as it attained its highest total for FY20 during Dec’19.

Data provided by Coal Ministry indicates that CIL’s coal dispatch to power sector increased 9% M-o-M to 42.1 MnT in Dec’19, as against 38.8 MnT reported in the previous month.

It was the first time when dispatch figures had crossed 40 MnT mark since May’19, as a result of the elevated coal production recorded by CIL. However, the dispatch volume was still noted 2% lower on the year compared with 42.91 MnT in Dec’18.

Indian power demand has been impacted by weaker than expected industrial activity during the year. According to the tentative data provided by Power ministry, power generation from coal-fired stations was marked 3% lower on the year at 638.82 BU in the first 9 months of FY20 (Apr-Dec’19).

CIL had also highlighted that power plants were flushed with 31.63 MnT of coal stock sufficient for 18 days’ consumption by the end of Dec’19, more than twice what it was on same day last year, which had limited the urgency for coal needed in the power stations.

Subsequently, CIL’s coal dispatch to power sector had fell 8% Y-o-Y to 334.27 MnT in the first 9 months compared with 363.61 MnT noted in the year-ago period. Whereas, dispatch to non-power sector had increased 2% Y-o-Y to 82.99 MnT in the same period.

SCCL’s Coal Dispatch to Power Sector:

Coal supplied by SCCL to the power sector stood 4.88 MnTY in Dec’19, down 2% Y-o-Y from 4.96 MnT in Dec’18.

Total dispatch to power sector in the first nine months of FY20 (Apr-Dec’19) has also decreased 2% Y-o-Y to 39.33 MnT as against 40 MnT in the year-ago period. Coal volumes supplied to the non-power sector dropped 23% Y-o-Y in the 9 month period to 7.04 MnT.
