CIL’s Coal Auction for Non Regulated Sectors in Apr-Oct’16 Stands at 22.14 MnT: Goyal

Coal India Limited (CIL) had auctioned 22.14 MnT of coal to the non-regulated sectors, such as cement, sponge iron, captive power plants and others, upto Oct’16 of the current fiscal, Piyush Goyal, the Minister of State for Coal, Power, New and Renewable Energy, and Mines informed the Lok Sabha. The quantity is a significant increase of around 10 MnT over that in the same period of the preceding fiscal, according to the Minister.

In a good news for the Indian coal industry, the Minister said that coal consumption has been increasing consistently in the country. But, in not a so good news, Goyal also revealed that the government is working towards renewable energy based electricity generation to reduce dependence on coal for power generation.

The Minister also revealed that according to the initial estimates for FY17, coal demand in the country during the fiscal was estimated at 884.87 MnT; out of which 598.73 MnT accounted for the power sector,91.11 MnT by the captive power sector, 34.37 MnT by the cement sector, 24.05 MnT by sponge iron sector and 80 MnT by others.
