CIL to put new Coal pricing system on hold for power utilities in West Bengal

Coal India will put on hold its new pricing system for state
power utilities in West Bengal for a month following a communication from the
Calcutta High Court, a company official said.

“The court on Wednesday requested us not to raise bills on the new pricing
mechanism for the utilities in Bengal,” the state-run firm's general
manager (legal), S Majumdar, said.

The new pricing was effective January 1. “Although it's a request we are
not raising any bills. The next hearing is scheduled on February 16 and we will
not raise bills at least till that time,” Majumdar said.

This is expected to have a national ramification since power utilities in other
sates could use this as a pretext for resisting the movement to the new pricing
system that is likely to raise prices of various category of coal by at least
40%.
