Coal supplies to power utilities by the state-run miner—Coal India Limited (CIL)—went up by 11% in Aug’17 over that in the same month of the last year. The higher coal supply during the month had helped the coal-fired power generators to raise their power production by 18%. According to the inputs at hand, CIL had supplied over 26 MnT of coal to coal-fired power generators during the month against at around 24 MnT in Aug’16.
During the month, demand for thermal power in the country was higher as there was a fall of around 11% in hydro power generation. As a consequence of the higher thermal power generation, coal stocks at the thermal power plants in the country went lower by around 4 MnT.
In order to step-up supplies to thermal power plants, CIL is temporarily lowering supplies to non-power entities.
Due to the incremental supply by CIL, coal imports in India during the Apr-July’17 period were around 19% lower, at around 19.29 MnT, than the corresponding period of the preceding fiscal.
