The recently concluded coal linkage auction for the sponge iron sector conducted by Coal India Limited (CIL) saw low enthusiasm among the participants; and perhaps the slowdown in the steel sector in India was responsible for the tepid show, as many industry insiders believe.
In the auction that lasted during 10-16 Jun’16, only 2.05 MnT, or around 55%, out of 3.78 MnT found takers.
The auction was conducted in 18 slots during the six days. Incidentally, there was no bidder in some of the slots, and only in three slots the booking exceeded the offered quantity, and premiums over the notified price were attracted in these cases.
For the takers, coal linkages were offered for five years, with an exit option after two years.
