CIL-SCCL Coal Dispatch to Power Sector

CIL: Coal Dispatch to Power Sector Up 3% M-o-M in Jan’20

Indian coal miner-CIL has continued the steady growth in coal supplies to the power sector during Jan’20, thus attaining its highest monthly off-take for the current fiscal.

According to the preliminary data provided by Coal Ministry, CIL’s coal dispatch to power sector was marked 43.2 MnT in Jan’20 as against 42.1 MnT reported in Dec’19. The coal company had also attained its first y-o-y growth for coal supplies since Apr’19, as dispatch volume had increased 3% on the year from 42 MnT in Jan’19.

Recovering from the torrential rains, CIL had managed to elevate coal dispatch which was reflected in an uptick in coal supplies. However, with the power plants equipped with adequate coal stocks, the company had focused more on liquidating the arrears supplies of the non-power sector during Jan’20.

Consequently, CIL’s coal dispatch to non-power sector surged 23% Y-o-Y to 12.85 MnT in Jan’20 as against 10.44 MnT in Jan’19, thus reporting a considerable higher growth among the two end-users.

Subdued power demand arising from the economic slowdown has been a pertinent cause for lower coal supplies to the power sector in FY20. Apparently, the power producers have drawn 377.86 MnT coal in the first 10 months of FY20 (Apr’19-Jan’20), which had decreased 7% Y-o-Y from 405.61 MnT noted in the year-ago period.

Supplies to the non-power sector, on the other hand, went up 4% Y-o-Y to 95.45 MnT in the 10-month period.

SCCL’s Coal Dispatch

Coal supplied by SCCL to the power sector was noted 4.69 MnT in Jan’20, down 11% Y-o-Y from 5.22 MnT in Jan’19. Total dispatch in the 10-month period decreased 3% Y-o-Y to 44.03 MnT as against 45.22 MnT noted in the year-ago period.
