According to the data provided by Coal Ministry, CIL’s coal supplies to the thermal power plants has reported a growth of 9% Y-o-Y to 40.9 MnT in Nov’17 against 37.6 MnT coal supplied during Nov’16. Coal dispatch to power plants was also 3% higher on the month compared with 39.9 MnT in Oct’17.
CIL’s coal supply to power plants has continued the upward spiral on the back of the higher rake loading which had increased 9% Y-o-Y in Nov’17. CIL’s average rake loading per day to the power sector was 217.3 in Nov’17 compared 199.7 rakes in Nov’16. The company had recorded average loading of 191.7 rakes per day to the coal generating units during Apr’17-Nov’17 compared to 179.5 rakes per day during the same period last year.
Total coal dispatch to the power sector during Apr’17-Nov’17 period has increased 9% to 290.6 MnT against 264.6 MnT during Apr’16-Nov’16.
The increase in supplies has resulted in coal stock at the power plants going up by over 4 MnT, compared to the closing stock of 7.9 MnT in Oct’17. Available coal stock at the power plants was 12.686 MnT as on 21 Dec’17, sufficient for 9 days of power generation. With stabilization of coal supplies to power plant, CIL’s coal supply to Non-power sector is also expected to increase gradually.
CIL Coal Auction:
CIL coal auction has witnessed aggressive buying among the consumers in the recent month, and the Nov’17 auction has also recorded growth in coal allocation during the month.
Spot E-auction:
Nov’17 auction saw coal allocated of 5.24 MnT and managed an increase of 35% over the notified price. Allocated quantity was 21% higher on the month compared to 4.34 MnT in Oct’17. While on the Y-o-Y basis; allocation increased 68% compared to 3.11 MnT in Nov’16.
Special Forward E-auction for Power:
Coal allocated in the auction increased 8% M-o-M to 3.17 MnT in Nov’17 compared with 2.93 MnT in Oct’17, but were down 2% on the year compared to 3.24 MnT in Nov’16.
Exclusive E-auction for Non-Power:
Coal allocation in the auction specially assigned for Non-power sector was 1.99 MnT in Nov’17, increasing both on the monthly as well as on the yearly basis.
Moreover, the auction for Non-power had also garnered more profit from coal sales this month, as the increase over notified price was 52% in the Nov’17 auction, compared to 34% in Oct’17.
The priority given by CIL to power sector for coal supply had forced Non-Power sector to turn towards auctions to meet their demand. As a result, total coal allocation in the E-auction for Non-Power sector has jumped 142% Y-o-Y to 10.51 MnT during Apr’17-Nov’17 compared to 4.349 MnT during the same period last year.
