On the basis of sterling performance, Coal India Ltd has achieved its highest ever coal production in FY18, while missing the annual production target.
CIL’s coal production stood 567.4 MnT in FY18 (Apr’17-Mar’18) as against 554.1 MnT in FY17, thereby recording a growth of 2.4% Y-o-Y in total production.
In order to meet the growing coal requirement of the country, CIL was determined to raise its production, and had recorded its highest ever monthly production of 72.29 MnT in Mar’18. The highest daily production was 3.1 MnT as on 31 Mar’18, with major contributions from CCL (0.723 MnT), SECL (0.638 MnT) and MCL (0.664 MnT).
However, in spite the best effort, CIL had fell 5% short of its annual production target of 600 MnT for FY18.
South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), was the highest coal producing subsidiary of CIL in FY18, with total output of 144.71 MnT followed by MCL (143.06 MnT). Amongst the 8 subsidiaries, only NCL and NECL had achieved their respective production targets; while BCCL and CCL were the subsidiaries to have noted decline in coal production in FY18.

CIL Coal Offtake:
CIL’s yearly coal offtake too had recorded substantial growth in FY18. The company posted its highest ever coal dispatch of 580.28 MnT in FY18, with an increase of 7% Y-o-Y compared with 543.3 MnT in FY17. Coal dispatch in the month of Mar’18 was 55.19 MnT.
CIL had been emphasizing more on coal offtake than production, in order to liquidate the ample of coal stock present at the pithead mines. On the back of higher coal dispatch, the company was able to lower the existing stock level to 55.49 MnT as on 1 Apr’18, which was 68.42 MnT last year.
ln a unique synergy with lndian Railways, CIL supplied a record 454.3 MnT of coal, an all time high coal supply to the power sector in 2017-18, representing a growth of about 7% from 425.4 MnT in 2016-17. Coal supply to the Non-power sector stood 126.3 MnT in FY18.
