Eurofer who are the representatives of the national steel federations of Europe are threatening to lodge a complaint and file for anti-dumping duties on stainless steel sheet and plate from China, specifically cold rolled products with the European commission.
Output from Chinese stainless steel mills has grown significantly through 2010, and significant quantities are being supplied into Europe. Cold rolled stainless is widely used for catering and domestic appliance markets along with architectural and oil and gas industries.
The European producers have had a tough time since 2009 and need higher prices to ensure profitability. This is seen as a protective measure especially as the European market is still at a critical stage in its economic recovery.
Eurofer canceled a similar complaint on imported stainless steel products in March 2010; presumably the threat was enough for Chinese mills to increase their price levels. Is this likely to just be a warning or this time will actions be followed through that would lead to significant duties being added to imports? Only time will tell.
