- Top 10 coal firms produce 591.24 million tonnes
- Shanxi miners recover from last year’s production limits
Mysteel Global: China’s 10 ten coal companies saw their raw coal production combined at 591.24 million tonnes in the first quarter this year, up by 7.2% or 39.74 million tonnes from the same period of 2024, according to statistics issued by the China National Coal Association (CNCA).
The accumulative figure represented a 49.2% proportion of the total output among all above-designated coal companies in China – those with an annual revenue of over Yuan 20 million ($2.7 million).
Among the ten producers, China Energy Investment Corporation (CHN Energy) still ranked first, with its coal output reaching 154.28 million tonnes in the first quarter, the CNCA data show.
A 3.55% on-year decrease in CHN Energy’s March output had pulled its quarterly output down by a meagre 0.7% from the same period last year, despite the fact that its production in the first two months of this year was marginally above the year-ago levels, Mysteel Global observes.
Jinneng Holding Group, headquartered in Shanxi province, North China, remained the second largest coal producer, mining a total of 100.8 million tonnes of raw coal in the first quarter. The company sustained the output growths it achieved over January-February, presenting in the first quarter a 17.5% output increase from a year earlier.
The other two companies in Shanxi province, namely Shanxi Coking Coal Group and Lu’an Chemical Group, also saw steep year-on-year surges in raw coal output over this quarter, with output of the former swelling the most by 29.5% and the latter by 17.5%.
But as Mysteel Global reported before, the substantial increases in coal output among Shanxi-based companies were more a result of the mining industry in this coal heartland recovering from last year’s production limits than they were of additional capacity advancements.
In March alone, the top 10 coal firms produced 203.49 million tonnes of raw coal, Mysteel calculated based on the CNCA’s year-to-date data. The figure accounted for 46.19% of the country’s total coal output disclosed by the National Bureau of Statistics.
