The social steel inventory of five major steel categories in China’s 21 key cities by the end of the first 10-days in Feb’22 was at 12.36 million tonnes (mnt), up 2.73 mnt or 28.3% from previous 10-day tally, showing an increase in the growth rate. The inventory is 4.48 mnt or 56.9% up from the level seen at the beginning of the year and up 650,000 tonnes or 5.6% compared to the same period of last year.
If analysed by the seven regions, all witnessed an inventory increase in the first 10 days in February compared to the previous ten-day tally.
For instance, there was increase of 640,000 t or 23.4% in southern China, which saw the highest increase in absolute figures.
Inventory increase in southwestern China was by 590,000 t or 38.8%.
Eastern China saw an increase of 550,000 t or 25%.
Northwestern China saw stocks rise by 360,000 t or 52.9%, which is the region with the highest rate of increase.
Northern China’s inventory rose by 290,000 t or 28.2%, while that in central China was up by 260,000 t or 25.2%.
Northeastern China saw inventory go up by 40,000 t or 9.1%.

Note: From 2022, the number of cities being surveyed for social steel inventory levels has increased to 21 from the previous 20. The total social inventory and inventory data of five major steel categories have been adjusted accordingly.
