China increased its domestic coal output by 5% y-o-y in 7MCY’25 to 2.8 billion tonnes (bnt) from 2.65 bnt in the year-ago period. The reason behind China’s coal boom lies in the power shortages experienced during 2020 and 2022 when surging demand and drought-induced dearth of hydropower had triggered a crisis-like situation.
