China has registered a marginal fall in monthly coal import to 15.23 MnT in Jan’16. Besides, the country’s total yearly coal import fell by 30% to 204 MnT in 2015 compared to 291.4 MnT in 2014.
China, a biggest buyer of coal in the globe, imported 15.23 MnT of all grade coal and lignite in Jan’16. The monthly coal import by the country has registered a fall of 2.41 MnT from the previous month. In December, China imported about 17.6 MnT of coal.
China’s Jan’16 coal import, including lignite, thermal and metallurgical coal, recorded a fall of 9% Y-o-Y compared to Jan’15. Chinese coal import has been falling persistently owing rise in domestic production, which may has weakened demand for imported coal.

Country-wise non-coking coal import in China during 2015
In 2015, the nation’s non-coking coal import reached at 156 MnT, reporting a steep declination of about 31% compared to the same period of 2014.
China imported about 96% of non-coking coal from top five major supplier countries viz. Australia (71 MnT), Indonesia (28MnT), North Korea (20 MnT), Russia (16 MnT) and Mongolia (14 MnT).
Contrasting to China, India’s coal import has risen by 3% to 224.7 MnT in 2015 compared to last year. It is expected that demand for imported coal will fall this year owing to increase in domestic production by CIL.
