China’s coal imports rise by 11.8% y-o-y in Jan-Aug’24

In Jan-Aug’24, China imported 341.621 million tonnes (mnt) of coal and lignite, marking an 11.8% y-o-y increase compared to the same period in 2023, according to data from the General Administration of Customs. In August alone, imports reached 45.844 mnt, showing a 3.4% y-o-y growth. While the monthly imports slightly decreased from 46.21 mnt in July, the cumulative import rise highlights China’s continued demand for coal.
