China’s coal imports drop 7% on month in Aug’21

Amid recovering domestic supplies and fall in demand compared to the peak summer months, China’s coal and lignite imports fell 7%, m-o-m, to 28.05 mn t in Aug’21, as per data maintained with CoalMint. In efforts to boost domestic coal supply, the state planner, NDRC, has relaxed conditions for increasing coal mining capacity and has also extended trial operations at 15 mines. China’s peak power demand cooled off in the second half of Aug. During the Jan-Aug’21 period, the country’s coal imports stood at 197.7 mn t, down 11%, y-o-y.
